Stop Spam, use temporary and disposable mail inboxes!

18. August 2008 – 02:22 PM

Oh, how we loathe it. The daily spam. Be it in E-Mail, be it in comments on blogs, forum or otherwise, be it in Instant Messengers, we just hate it and we just can’t seem to avoid it. It seems to never die, like a perpetuum mobile. Spammers earn millions and cause billions in damage. It is a proven fact.

From Day 1 when I got my first Spam (Penisenlargement anyone? Whole 10 inches! I’m serious!) I’ve been looking for methods to avoid it. I have been somewhat successful to some degree. Let’s start with our lovely E-Mail Spam. What say you?

They keyword is Temporary/Disposable Email Service.

Warhammer Online to be released…trimmed!

12. July 2008 – 02:22 PM

Recently there’s been a lot of rumors regarding some existing and some in-development games. One of them was Warhammer Online, sadly I have no quotes nor links to these rumors regarding Warhammer Online. I forgot to write them down. Please forgive me as I’m only a human being and make mistakes too.

Nevertheless one rumor in particular came to be true. Content is being cut from the current Warhammer Online in beta status. And will not be there upon launch of Warhammer Online.

What I’m talking about are 4 classes and 4 cities. The classes (and their capital cities!) being removed are as following:

2008, the year of delayed MMORPGs came true!

26. March 2008 – 11:50 AM

Remember how I stated in here that Warhammer Online WILL be delayed again based on personal feelings?

Well, big surprise… here’s the confirmation of Warhammer Online being delayed again until fall 2008.

Addendum from Warhammer Online Newsletter-Subscription:

On the day we signed the agreement to license Warhammer from Games Workshop, I promised them that we would create a great and glorious game, a truly next-generation MMORPG. Today, I have news to report; we are going to delay the release of WAR until Fall 2008. While we do not expect this announcement to be met with fanfare and cheering crowds; the additional time will be spent hammering WAR into an even better game that it is today.

During the most recent phase of beta testing, two things have become clear. One was that our key innovations - Public Quests, Tome of Knowledge and Realm vs. Realm combat - were all coming along extremely well, as was the first stage of our innovative crafting system. The second, that the game would benefit from additional iteration time as well as adding a layer of polish or two. Fortunately, as part of Electronic Arts, we are able to do just that.

While I have no doubt that the community will experience a wide range of emotions over this decision, I urge you to remember one thing (and to keep the tar cold and the feathers on the birds), that our goal has never been to release a game by a certain date but to release a great Warhammer MMORPG. We have not wavered from this goal and with the full support of Games Workshop, GOA and Electronic Arts we intend to release a glorious next-generation MMORPG.

As always, I thank the community for its support, patronage and its patience.

Mark Jacobs

VP, GM EA Mythic

Let’s see that leaves… Age of Conan to be delayed again, World of Arenacraft (Sorry, I meant Warcraft, my mistake): The Wrath of the Lichking to be announced. Anything big or at least highly anticipated MMOS I’m missing for this year?

Now is the time to say this, I TOLD YOU SO!

Be seeing you all,
Don Salva

5 easy-to-do tweaks to make your Firefox faster!

18. February 2008 – 02:38 PM

I was angry and frustrated that Firefox once again has slowed down the i-lost-count-this time! Seriously, it’s such a great browser but so full of little problems which really can get annoying as hell!

So I went to google and found 5 easy-to-do tweak with remarkable results! Remarkable, because you truly can see the difference between a standard and a tweaked Firefox. One might wonder why such tweaks are not standard options..

Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Look for the following entries:

  1. “network.http.pipelining” and set value to true
  2. “network.http.proxy.pipelining” and set value to true
  3. “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and set value to 30-40
  4. “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set value to 0
  5. “config.trim_on_minimize” and set value to true

If you don’t have them, create them:

  1. Right click -> new -> boolean -> type in “network.http.pipelining” -> set value to true
  2. Right click -> new -> boolean -> type in “network.http.proxy.pipelining” -> set value to true
  3. Right click -> new -> boolean -> type in “config.trim_on_minimize” -> set value to true
  4. Right click -> new -> integer -> type in “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” -> set value to 30 (default is 1)
  5. Right click -> new -> integer -> type in “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” -> set value to 0

Now the explanation as to what does what:

network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining:

It enables pipe-lining, which means the browser normally sends 1 request at a time, with pipeline enabled it will send the amount of request you set in “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests”!

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests:

Like I said Firefox usually sends 1 request at any time. By setting a different value than 1, you force Firefox to send more requests thus enabling it to load faster, because he gets more responses at any time.

config.trim_on_minimize:

Each time you minimize your Firefox it will clear the RAM. Firefox is infamous of wasting RAM for Pages you don’t need so you can go “back” to them.

nglayout.initialpaint.delay:

If this value doesn’t exist or isn’t set Firefox waits 250 milliseconds, or 0.25 of a second then starts rendering the requested page(s). People report that setting it to 0, ergo forcing Firefox to begin rendering immediately causes almost all pages to show up faster.

Addendum:

If you are one of the lazy lot, and don’t want to manually tweak your Firefox, here’s a great Extension with virtually the same effect

Fasterfox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1269

Enjoy your new, faster Firefox!

2008, the year of delayed MMORPGs

24. January 2008 – 11:13 AM

I’m a big fan of mmorpg’s. I started playing MMORPG’s some months after Meridian 59 came out, migrated to Ultima Online and finally found my home in Star Wars Galaxies.

Star Wars Galaxies was one of the most amazing mmorpg’s I’ve played up until today. Mind you, I’m not talking Post-NGE SWG. The immersion of the characters into the world, the awesome sandbox principle…just awesome. (A few more games I’ve played are Everquest 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Vanguard, Anarchy Online, Neocron, Lord of the Rings Online).

Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho..the 2nd!

14. December 2007 – 01:25 AM

I’ve decided to share one of my favorite lyrics with you. It’s about Pirates and it’s used in the movies of “Pirates of the Caribbean” !

YO HO (A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME)
Lyrics by Xavier Atencio and music by George Bruns

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot,
Drink up me ‘earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we’re really a fright,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.

We’re rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.
We’re devils and black sheep, really bad eggs,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
We’re beggars and blighters, ne’er-do-well cads,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.
Aye, but we’re loved by our mommies and dads,
Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho.

I often find myself humming this song or even singing. But when I play Pirates of the Burning Sea this song really ups a notch. I can only suggest it for PotbS.

Drink up, me ‘earties, yo ho!

14. December 2007 – 01:25 AM

It’s time for the 1st entry in this, oh so wonderful, blog!

I got so much time on my hands I don’t even know what to do…so I decided “Heck, let’s do something completely boring and utterly stupid. Let’s frap and youtube the animated emotes of the MMORPG to come “Pirates of the Burning Sea” !

It took me about 6 hours of frapsing, cutting, deleting, swearing, smashing the keyboard, insulting in-game /tell, editing, uploading on YouTube, getting 500 Error while uploading and losing all data for all 171 average 9 seconds clips to be done.

Here’s the emote /yoho which actually fits the mood I was after the 6 hours of torture:

But I gotta tell you it was an interesting experience in all, in fact it was my 1st serious “project” for my YouTube account. I hope to have some more ideas in my so uncreative and apathetic (NO! I mean apathetic not pathetic!) brain for this blog in the future.

Enjoy!

PS: Criticism and suggestions are always welcome, fellas!
